Two Weekly Chess Openings - 06th October 2026

Hey Reader,

Welcome back to Chess Openings Tueday.

Quick teaser - there's an exciting announcement coming soon. If you're wanting to learn and improve your openings (and since you're reading this, I'd guess you are), then you won't want to miss it.

Because, I've figured out how to make learning feel like playing real games... and all it takes is 5 minutes a day.

Keep an eye on your inbox.

Until then, here are this week's openings.

Nimzo-Larsen Attack

Chess Notation:

1. b3

Win Rate:

  • Black: 46%
  • White: 50%
  • Draw: 4%

Themes:

Flank Attack, Hypermodern, Positional, Slow Buildup

Pros

  1. Avoids well-prepared theoretical lines
  2. Creates unique positions requiring independent thinking
  3. Allows White to adapt to various Black setups
  4. Can transpose into English or Réti structures

Cons

  1. Can surrender initial central control to Black
  2. Bishop on b2 may become obstructed by White’s own pawns
  3. Less explored theoretically than mainstream openings
  4. May provide less direct attacking potential than e4/d4 systems

Zaire Defense

Chess Notation:

1. d4 Nc6 2. d5 Nb8 3. e4 Nf6 4. e5 Ng8

Win Rate:

  • Black: 51%
  • White: 56%
  • Draw: 3%

Themes:

Defensive, Solid, Tricky/Unorthodox

Pros

  1. Completely surprises unprepared opponents
  2. Avoids all standard opening theory
  3. Creates unique positions from the first moves
  4. May have psychological impact on opponent

Cons

  1. Severely delays development and wastes tempo
  2. Concedes significant space and initiative to White
  3. Creates no threats or pressure on White’s position
  4. Generally considered objectively inferior to standard defenses

That's it for today!

As always, feel free to reply with your thoughts, suggestions, ideas, etc.

Have a good week :)

Cheers,
James
